JL Windows supplies custom thermally broken tilt-and-turn windows in Melbourne for compatible homes and building projects. A tilt-and-turn sash can tilt inward at the top for controlled ventilation or open inward from the side for a larger opening and internal cleaning access.

The JL Thermal system includes an insulating section between the internal and external aluminium profiles and can be combined with compatible double glazing, Low E glass, privacy glass and selected hardware.

How Tilt-and-Turn Windows Work

The handle controls two opening functions. In tilt mode, the top of the sash moves inward while the lower section remains supported. In turn mode, the side-hinged sash opens inward. Operating instructions and handle positions should be confirmed for the selected hardware.

Thermally Broken Aluminium Frame

A thermal break separates the internal and external aluminium profiles with an insulating section, reducing direct heat transfer through the frame. This is different from double glazing, which improves the glass component. Both frame and glass should be specified for the complete window.

JL Thermal Tilt-and-Turn Features

  • Two opening functions in one compatible sash
  • Top tilt position for controlled ventilation
  • Inward side opening for a larger clear opening
  • Internal access to both sides of the glass for cleaning
  • Thermally broken aluminium frame construction
  • Compatible double-glazed units and Low E glass
  • Powder-coated colour options
  • Compatible locks, handles and opening restrictors

Double-Glazed Tilt-and-Turn Windows

Double glazing uses two panes separated by a sealed cavity and can reduce heat transfer through the glazed area compared with basic single glass. Combining compatible double glazing with a thermally broken frame addresses both the glass and aluminium components.

Glass thicknesses, cavity, Low E coating, obscure glass and any laminated or toughened glass must suit window size, location and the selected system. Read our double-glazed windows Melbourne guide.

Ventilation and Internal Clearance

Tilt mode can provide ventilation without fully opening the sash. Turn mode requires clear internal space, so curtains, blinds, furniture and window reveals must be considered. The sash size, weight, hardware and any project opening restrictions also require review.

Cleaning and Flyscreen Considerations

The inward turn function can provide internal access to the external glass surface, which may assist cleaning where the location is suitable. Flyscreen solutions vary because the sash opens inward. Confirm the required screen type and how it will be removed or operated before ordering.

Tilt-and-Turn or Casement Windows?

A casement window generally provides one side-opening function, while tilt-and-turn hardware provides both tilt and inward turn modes. The appropriate option depends on internal clearance, ventilation, cleaning access, hardware, façade design and budget.

Replacement Tilt-and-Turn Windows

Tilt-and-turn windows can be considered for replacement projects where the opening and internal clearance are suitable. Existing frames, reveals, wall condition, access, flashing and surrounding finishes require assessment before dimensions are confirmed.
