Safe and energy-efficient windows depend on the complete specification—not a single glass label or frame feature. For Melbourne homes, the right combination may include safety glass in required locations, suitable double glazing, Low E glass, compatible aluminium frames, reliable hardware and careful installation.
This guide outlines the questions homeowners and builders should resolve before ordering. Final glass selection must follow the project drawings, applicable requirements and advice from the relevant building professionals.
Safety Glass and Energy Performance Are Different
Safety glazing is selected to reduce the risk of serious injury if glass is impacted or broken. Energy performance describes how the complete window manages heat transfer and solar heat gain. A pane can be safety glass without providing strong insulation, and an insulated glass unit still needs the correct safety-glass type where required.
Both issues should be checked together because glass makeup affects thickness, weight, frame capacity, hardware and cost.
Common Safety-Glass Options
Toughened glass
Toughened glass is heat treated to increase strength. If it breaks, it is designed to fragment into relatively small pieces rather than large sharp shards. It is commonly specified in locations where safety glazing is required, subject to the opening and building design.
Laminated glass
Laminated glass contains an interlayer that helps hold broken glass together. Depending on its makeup, it may be selected for safety, security, acoustic or other project requirements. It is not automatically the best thermal option; that depends on the complete insulated glass unit and frame.
How Windows Improve Energy Efficiency
- Double glazing: two panes separated by a sealed cavity reduce heat transfer through the glass compared with basic single glazing.
- Low E coating: a low-emissivity coating helps manage radiant heat transfer. Different coatings can have different solar-control characteristics.
- Thermally broken frames: an insulating section reduces direct heat transfer through aluminium profiles.
- Correct seals: compatible gaskets and closing pressure support air and weather sealing.
- Installation: frame position, fixing, perimeter sealing, flashing and drainage all affect the finished result.

Whole-Window Ratings Matter
An energy report generally assesses the complete window rather than the centre of the glass alone. The frame, sash, spacers, glass, size and opening type contribute to whole-window values such as U-value and solar heat gain coefficient.
A lower U-value generally indicates less heat transfer through the complete window. SHGC describes how much solar heat passes through. The preferred combination varies with climate, orientation, shading and the overall building design, so a lower SHGC is not automatically better for every window.
Hardware, Openings and Security
Glass is only one part of window safety and security. Sash dimensions, hinges, locks, restrictors, rollers, handles and fixing points must suit the selected aluminium system and glass weight. Large or heavy sashes require particular attention to operating hardware and product limits.
Window restrictors may be needed in certain locations, but the requirement depends on the building and opening position. Confirm these details during design so the frame, sash, flyscreen and restrictor work together.

Common Misunderstandings
Is all toughened glass energy efficient?
No. Toughening is primarily a safety treatment. Thermal performance depends on the full glass makeup and frame.
Is double glazing always laminated?
No. An insulated glass unit may use annealed, toughened, laminated or coated panes in different combinations, depending on the project requirements.
Does thicker glass always block more noise?
Acoustic performance depends on the complete glass makeup, pane thicknesses, cavity, seals, frame and installation. Thickness alone does not describe the result.
