Aluminium Window & Door Care and Maintenance
Simple routine care helps aluminium windows and doors stay clean, operate smoothly and makes it easier to identify adjustment or drainage issues before they become larger problems. This JL guide covers practical care for powder-coated aluminium frames, glass, tracks, drainage paths, seals and moving hardware.
Routine Cleaning
For normal residential cleaning, use clean water with a soft non-abrasive cloth or sponge. Where needed, use a mild pH-neutral detergent and rinse the surface thoroughly afterwards. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh cleaners and aggressive solvents on powder-coated aluminium.
Keep Sliding Tracks Clean
Dirt, plaster dust, sand and building debris can increase resistance in sliding windows and doors. Vacuum or wipe tracks regularly and keep drainage openings clear. If a panel becomes noticeably harder to operate, do not force it; check the track and contact JL if adjustment may be required.
Drainage and Weep Paths
Window and door systems rely on designed drainage paths. Do not permanently seal, block or fill drainage openings in the frame. After construction or renovation work, check that mortar, silicone, render, dirt or other debris has not obstructed the sill drainage path.
Glass Care
Clean glass with suitable non-abrasive glass-cleaning methods. Special coated glass can have specific care requirements, so the exact glazing specification should be identified before using unfamiliar chemicals, blades or abrasive cleaning products.
See the JL glass selection guide for glazing information.
Hardware, Locks and Rollers
Handles, locks, hinges and rollers are moving components. Keep them free of construction residue and do not force a window or door that is binding. Some operating issues can be resolved through adjustment rather than replacement.
Review JL window and door hardware.
After Building Work
Protect aluminium, glass, seals and hardware from mortar, render, plaster, paint, grinding debris and strong building chemicals. Remove protective materials in accordance with the product or material requirements rather than leaving tapes or films exposed for extended periods.
Coastal and Higher-Exposure Locations
Properties exposed to salt, airborne pollutants or heavy environmental deposits generally require more frequent cleaning than sheltered suburban locations. The appropriate interval depends on the actual exposure and finish specification.
When to Contact JL
Contact JL if you notice persistent difficulty operating a sash or door panel, damaged hardware, failed glass units, unusual water entry, damaged seals or another issue that cannot be resolved through basic cleaning.
For after-sales support, provide the project or order name, affected opening reference where available, a clear description and photos or video. This helps identify whether the next step relates to adjustment, hardware, glass, manufacture, installation or surrounding building work.
