How to pick Glass??

Lately, the most frequently asked question from my followers is about how to choose glass for thermal break aluminum doors and windows. Should they go for double-layer insulated glass or triple-layer insulated glass? Under what conditions should laminated insulated glass be chosen? And how should one select soundproof glass for doors and windows? Today, through this article, I aim to help everyone understand how to choose glass types for thermal break aluminum doors and windows.

Before selecting soundproof glass, it’s essential to understand the types of noise that bother us. Noise can be classified into three levels based on frequency, including: 🔔 High-frequency: Horns, train whistles—sounds with strong penetration that can be irritating to our eardrums. 🔔 Mid-frequency: Sounds such as airplane engines, car engines, wind noise, human voices, dog barking, school broadcasts, square dancing, etc. 🔔 Low-frequency: Sounds like train noises, car tire noise, engine noise, air conditioner outdoor unit noise, and so on.

Once we understand these three frequency ranges, we can clearly determine that if you need to block mid-to-high-frequency noise, ordinary insulated glass with an air layer in the middle (double-layer glass) is sufficient. However, if you need to block mid-to-low-frequency noise, it is recommended to choose laminated insulated glass.

So, what is the most cost-effective combination? ✅ Insulated Glass: It is currently the most widely used in the market due to its simple and mature characteristics, as well as low cost. It is favored by both businesses and consumers. However, insulated glass alone cannot effectively block mid-to-low-frequency noise, so it is not suitable for use in places such as high-speed rail stations or along busy roads.

Whether it’s triple-layer glass or double-layer insulated glass, the difference in soundproofing effect is not significant. Triple-layer glass is mainly used for thermal insulation and soundproofing, and it is more common in cold northern regions. In the southern regions, double-layer insulated glass offers better value for money.

✅ Laminated Insulated Glass: The choice of laminated insulated glass comes with certain prerequisites. Although thicker glass is generally better, consideration should also be given to the load-bearing capacity of profiles and hardware. It is recommended that the total thickness of the glass be less than 25mm for the best performance. Additionally, due to the impact of laminated insulation, the thermal insulation performance of the glass is compromised compared to triple-layer insulated glass. If thermal insulation is a priority, it is advisable to fill the laminated glass with argon gas.

Through the above analysis, you can choose the most suitable glass type according to your actual needs.
